Which once started off as a pure e-commerce site for books is one of the best technology companies today. Yes, I am talking about Amazon.com. 15 years back, Amazon simplified online buying of books and the business popularity drove it to sell plethora of items online soon.

It is already the largest electronic commerce site in the planet. Whats more impressive is the business segment which amazon ventured into in the past few years. Not stopping with buying numerous other companies on its way, it built some of the best technologies of today – Amazon web services and products – Elastic Compute Cloud EC2, Simple Storage Service S3, Elastic MapReduce, CloudFront, SimpleDB, Virtual Private Cloud VPC and many others. Wait wait … this article is not about Amazon.com. I am here to talk about a company which wannabe India’s Amazon.com.

Infibeam.com, an Indian e-commerce site recently launched India’s first e-book reader Pi (why this name ?). Pi reads books, magazines, newpapers and other documents. Supports local Indian Languages, very thin and weighs just 180 gm. The spec is NOT at all bad.

When Amazon’s e-book reader Kindle is challenged by Apple’s iPad worldwide, an India grown company Infibeam is preparing for a face to face fight with other well known e-book reader companies in the local space. Without getting into much technical details about the Amazon’s Kindle or Apple’s iPad or Infibeam’s Pi and their comparisons or price tags or which one to buy, what i want to bring about here is for the first time (to my knowledge in the electronics items space) a desi company is launching a product of a very similar line with other BIG guns and around the same time.

Over past few decades, we have just been consumers of classy electronics items innovated, designed and manufactured by countries like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, US and many others. Of course we get home grown replica of these electronic items after few years and they are mostly copy cats. But, slowly things are going positive. We are seeing more and more indian companies taking a plunge in innovation and spending crores. And now, we are in a position to compare Apple’s iPad or Amazon’s Kindle with a home grown variety Pi. Am sure, Pi will find tough time to survive and compete with big pockets and mega marketing drive by world class companies.

Coming to the article title, I should say Infibeam.com is sure wannabe India’s Amazon.com. Right from the company logo design, business segment, site design, site layouts, Product promos everything looks similar to that of Amazon’s. Who knows, Infibeam.com wants to get notified by Amazon and trying to get bought over by them.

The country, with world’s youngest and most talented population will not take much time to innovate new electronic items and be nightmares to other world class companies. Its all about the start. A step has been taken forward with product like Infibeam’s Pi. And, I am happy. What say ?
