BRU World Cafe – sip your favourite coffees in Hindustan Unilever’s latest Espresso chain

Hindustan Unilever (HUL) which houses some of the India’s well known brands is ready for the next fight. The company has been constantly trying with new ideas over the past few years to fight back the competition from the local FMCG companies like Godrej, Dabur. HUL introduced brands like Knoor Soups and concepts likenbsp;Kwality Swirl Ice Cream parlours to its portfolio and seems they have started to pay off. Now, Hindustan Unilever has started Cafe chain in the name ofnbsp;one of its populous brands in the food amp; drinks segment – Bru as “BRU World Cafe” chain by opening their first 3 retail outlets in Mumbai.

Well, the timing can be no perfect than this. Just on the heels on US coffee retail chain Starbucks planning to setup cafes in India and an another US coffee/food retail major Dunkin Donuts waiting to enter the country, HUL has just inched up faster to open the coffee retail units. Cafe and Espresso bars are no new to India. Cafe Coffee Day, Barista (acquired by Italian coffee roaster Lavazza), Costa Coffee, Nescafe are to name a few.

Cafe Coffee Day has been in the country for over 15 years and literally the first one to introduce Cafe and Espresso bar culture to the Indian masses. It has over 1000 retail units spun across 20 cities and planning to scale up further. Similarly other Espresso bars are also on expansion spree and want to be well before Starbucks and other global brands step in. So, theres going to be a stiff competition among the cafe bars in the coming days and BRU world Cafe has to find its place sooner than later. If this 40 year old brand can’t do the magic, who else can ?
