GroupOn enters India – acquires indian daily deals startup SoSasta.com (?)

GroupOn – the foremost daily deals site and the multi billion dollar heavyweight has been waiting for few months to enter the highly potential daily deals sector in India and finally it has found a way. Its been rumoured that GroupOn has acquired kolkata based daily deals startup SoSasta.com.

GroupOn which recently took everyone by surprise by turning down the whopping $6 billion buyout from Google, is believed to be in good revenue run rate and cash rich. Moreover, the company recently closed a massive $950 million funding and has all reasons to buyout anyone it sees on the way.

Indian daily deals space is fairly new and already has dozens of GroupOn clones – SnapDeal.com, MyDala.com, Taggle.com, Grabbon.com, DealsAndYou.com, Koovs.com, BuyThePrice.com and many others. It was well known that whenever GroupOn enters Indian market, it would buy some local player and then expand it.

And now, AlooTechie has broken the news of GroupOn entering India with buyout of Kolkata based daily deals site SoSasta.com. SoSasta.com, co-founded by former Google employees Ananya Bubna and Udayan Bubna, is a venture of Friday Media. Launched from Kolkata in 2010, SoSasta is now building its presence in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Nagpur.

What ? Cash rich GroupOn acquiring some unknown player ?? SoSasta doesn’t have sizable presence in India yet when compared to its peers like SnapDeal.com , Taggle.com or DealsAndYou.com. If this rumour of GroupOn buying SoSasta.com turns out to be true, then its real surprise for the tech buffs in the country.

GroupOn is one the hottest and highly valued internet startups (next to Facebook.com and Zynga.com) around and is continuously giving out surprises. I am sure, GroupOn’s entry to Indian market will redefine the local eCommerce space by pulling tons of fresh people to buy deals online.
