Meru Cabs – Hire a Taxi/Cab in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad & Bangalore

NASSCOM shortlisted many companies for its ‘IT User Award 2009′ and here are the finalists list. In the Travel category of IT user awards, there are 3 finalists, 1. Mumbai International Airport, 2. Vlink/Meru Cabs, 3. CarzonRent/EasyCabs.

Meru Cabs is based out of mumbai and trying to provide a world-class taxi services in India by having 3500+ cabs in all major cities. It got recognized as one of the largest & Best Taxi company in the country by All India Passengers Association. India Value Fund(IVF) is the investor, who is managing a corpus of over 650 Million US$ in the company.

Meru Cabs tries to distinguish themselves from other cab/taxi operators by having good training to the taxi drivers, they have a training academy in Mumbai. They were in the media for some time, receiving awards in different category and the MD also got few awards for best entrepreneurs.

Taxi fare looks decent to me when compared to the Autos meters which never show up! Meru cabs claims that they have digital tamper proof meter and have pretty transparent fare structure. The fares vary for the cities, detailed fare charts here. We will just take the bangalore fare structure for analysis,

Indian Taxi

The waiting charges looks convincing to me and reg the fares, they put a decent margin since they are running the business in a large scale. In case if a small private taxi cab company is taking us 10km ride in Bangalore, I guess they may ask 200-300Rs. Based on the above calculations, Meru cab rate is coming around 150Rs which is ok.

If you are commuting from place like Koramangala to Electronic City(13kms) daily, its going to be 195Rs. And for a month it will be approximately 4485Rs and if you share with your friends it will be cheaper. I bet you don’t want to drive in Bangalore or Mumbai traffic. So, its better to get into the cab and sleep :) But the biggest disadvantage is that the waiting time! Say if the traffic is struck and not moving, its going to cost you easily 100Rs extra which is a problem!

Advantages/Features in Meru Cabs:

  • Tamper-proof digital meter
  • Emergency security features & airport pickups
  • lost and found, this should be an unique feature for India taxi/cab market.

Problems/Challenges:

  • Waiting charge 10Rs for every 15mins in cities like Mumbai/Bangalore where you are always going to wait! but still 10Rs looks ok.
  • Security is a still concern, especially working women catching taxis during night time! not sure how Meru cabs gives confidence here except their caption :)
