Mobile number portability has been a key focus article in moneymint and we have been tracking its various developments here, here, here and here. Now the latest news is that Telecordia, the US based telecom solution has got the nod from the Govt. especially the home ministry to set up its shop in India. As a result the number portability may become a reality by May this year.

Telecordia has a 74:26 joint venture with Deepak Talwar Consultants. The CEO and CFO shall be Indians. The other rider is the number portability data concerning India shall be maintained in a server in India. Foreign Investment Promotion Board(FIPB) has asked DoT to examine Telecordia’s reply to ensure that their technology is security proof. FIPB will take a decision on granting approval only after receiving DoT’s report.

In the past the government has been forced to push the date for introduction of mobile number portability because of the security implications raised by the home ministry. Earlier the development had hit a roadblock owing to Telecordia’s operations in Pakistan. Telecordia, however, got the US administration to back its case with the Indian government. And hence, the latest development.

Hope all gets clarified and resolved in a smooth way and we are able to hold on to our mobile numbers in spite of changing location and service provider.
