Nokia is still the top mobile handset in India – 59.1% market share – Nokia 3110c top used – InMobi Mobile Ads Insight Report
Research Reports from consulting companies (KPMG, McKinsey, IDG etc.,) generally try to speculate on market trends and come up with various charts/graphs for the future. While the hit ratio of these research reports are not known, I would rather like to read reports generated from the usage data as they give us the real picture of the current market.
And, if such usage reports are from the market leaders then they carry tons of facts and one can analyse the market trend with such data. Here is one such type. InMobi, one the leading Mobile Ad networks has released its mobile insights report for the quarter October 2010 – January 2011 and does carry some interesting facts. Before reading too much into this report, remember that all these data are based on the Mobiles which served InMobi’s ads and not the entire Indian mobile market.

1. Mobile Ad market grew by 27% over the past three months – reaching over 1.5 billion Ad impressions.
2. Smartphones have started to penetrate the indian mobile handset market – Smartphone ad impressions grew by over 44%
3. Nokia continues to be the Top Mobile Operating System in India – has 34.5% of mobile ad impression share.
4. Nokia is still the top mobile handset in India – has 59.1% mobile ad impression market share. Samsung is a distant runner up with 23.8% market share.
5. Nokia 3110c is the widely used mobile handset – accounts for 5.4% of total ad impressions served in India. Other sidely used mobile handsets india are Nokia 5233, Nokia 7210, Samsung GT-c3303, Nokia N2690.

Well, here is some more insights from the report which are not so openly quoted.
– Android, iPhone, BlackBerry OS are making in roads. They are inching up at slower rate with Android phones seen leading this pack.
– Though Nokia is the top most used Mobile OS, it continues to shed its market share at fast pace. Compared to the previous set of data, Nokia Mobile OS market share came down by 3.6%.

– Of course, Nokia is still the widely used mobile handsets in India. It has over 59% market share. But, the trend is down hill for it lost around 5.5% market share in just last 3 months.

Well, Nokia is clearly losing in the Indian Mobile Market. InMobi’s Ad Impression Insight report says so. Lets see if Nokia’s recent tie up with Microsoft cab bring in any fortune to the company and stop the graph going down hill.
