Fake IMEI China, Korean Mobile Handsets Ban – Is your IMEI Genuine ? Verify now!

By Manoj Govindassamy on 15 November, 2009, 8:21 am

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) brought in a new rule few months back, of banning all mobiles handsets that do not carry the legitimate International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. Mostly cheap China and Korean Mobiles that sneaked in the Indian Market are either missing IMEI or having fake IMEI number are suppose to face the death by this rule.

IMEI number is a 15-digit code that identifies a mobile and helps prevent use of stolen handsets for making calls by enabling security agencies to track down the specific user. Fake IMEI Chinese Mobile Handsets are cheap, good looking but lack quality and other safety norms. These electronics items easily woo the low end users with their price tags and is always a headache to local made handsets.

As per the ban, telecom operators are asked not to process calls from mobile handsets without IMEI numbers from November 20. Consumers who had purchased such handsets were now likely to face disconnections. This can result in revenue loss to telecom companies as well, so these telcos are sending SMS alerts to those users having Fake IMEI handsets.

You can find the 15-digit IMEI number of your mobile by typing *#06#. To verify if your phone has a genuine IMEI number, you can send a SMS with “IMEI <15-digit number>” to 53232. If the reply states that the number is not genuine, then you can implant a genuine IMEI number under the GII programme by contacting your mobile operator. The cost for the implanting would be Rs. 199 per phone. So, get it done immediately.

China Mobiles – Available In Chennai

Govt. of India cannot ban any China imported product (such as mobiles, electronics, furniture… etc) as it has to comply WTO norms, recently Govt. of India had to lift the China Toys ban due to WTO pressure. But, making these items follow safety and quality norms are the only way to keep them in check. Clever isn’t it ?

Just a few months back I purchased a chinese mobile hand set brand : “SIGMATEL” (Duo). It was working well. Seeing an ad regarding verification of IMEI I sent a SMS to 53232 on 22/11/09 and on the same day I received back a SMS from 53232 as : “Success- This IMEI belongs to BRAND SIGMATEL T33i” but a week thereafter the mobile net work connection through my two SIMs stopped to work. The same sims if put in different mobile handsets works. That is my hand set is dead……My question is -Is Sigmatel brand is banned? Will any body enlighten me on this?

you mean, you want to set up IMEI installation center, where people can get a valid IMEI for Rs.199/- ? Virgin Mobile Stores are already doing this service. Doesn’t it require govt approval for setting up your own center IMEI installation.

      D.M. Bhattacharyya December 19, 2009

      Dear Mr. Mirza,
