Sify MyStorage – desi companies and cloud storage initiatives – do paid software plans sell here ?

Its the same old Yahoo Briefcase concept. Now it is called Cloud Storage. Yes, the old wine in new bottle. And, it sells well. Cloud storage companies like Dropbox.com, Box.net, Carbonite, Sugar Sync have all closed stellar funding rounds and startups like Dropbox and Box.net valuations is in Billions now. In fact, many of these companies are profitable and continuing to mint more money.

Desi companies have already started to grab a pie in this buzzing cloud storage. Latest to join the badwagon is Sify. Pretty unsual isn’t ? The broadband company has over 80K customers and its portal is one of the top sites in India. Sify wants to tap this big customer base by launching its own cloud storage product.

Sify Technologies has unvelied Sify Mystorage, a cloud based online storage and backup solution for consumers and small businesses. Just like other cloud storage products, Sify MyStorage allows users to store data remotely, and access it through a web based interface as well as through a desktop application. Similar to Dropbox plan, 2GB storage offered for free but for trial period only and its storage capacity going upto 100 GB.

Sify isn’t interested in giving this service totally free. Its storage plan of 2GB is just a trial service and the minmal storage plan that customers can buy is 10GB whcih is priced at Rs. 1200/- for 6 months. Seems Sify MyStorage plan is raning upto 100GB.

Another broadband service provider who is offering cloud storage plan is Airtel. It offers its Online Desktop Service customers a 10GB plan. Again this is a paid service and part of destop service plan.

I am sure, there are plethora of other broadband providers and portal companies who are coming up with cloud storage plans. But do you think these paid software services sell in India ?  I seriously doubt it. Tell me one software you liked it and paid for its value. Unless otherwise the software is bundled in a bigger service package and its cost is hidden under a cover, we think hundred times to pay for a software. Western world generally like to pay for the software services they use. Be it Microsoft Office or Flickr or other software/web products, people on the west like to pay for it. But in India, where people grew up with pirated softwares don’t prefer to pay for any software products. Lets wait and watch how these cloud storage premium plans sell in India.

Think if there is a value  that the service offers, we are willing to pay for it. Though other services offer free, they basically involve manual drag & drop operation and we do not have the time for it. With sify, the only advantage i see is that its completely automatic. I just choose which folders are important and any changes to those folders happens automatically. Rs.175 per month looks very affordable for a 10 GB plan. I am currently enrolled for their free trial of 2 GB and I would definitely upgrade.
