DTH Set Top Box portability – Tata Sky, Reliance BIG TV, Zee Dish TV under pressure

Similar to telecom industry, more competition in DTH space led to affordable DTH tariff structures and more and more people are migrating from the traditional cable based systems to DTH…. But, DTH players aren’t ready to make the space so easy for the users jumping to competitors service.Competition commission of India (CCI) has been receiving tons of complaints on these DTH players on how they put forth the conditions for using their hardwares. Set Top Boxes which receive the signal for any DTH player is technically same and a same box should be usable for all DTH services. But, DTH operators like Tata Sky, Reliance Big TV and ZEE’s Dish TV (their market share) have made their Set Top Boxes usable only with their services…. In fact, this is violation of section 3 & 4 of CCI Act and the commission has all the power to penalize these DTH players for not adhering to the rules.

It is known that almost 50% Indian households own a television set which is astonishing given that 77 % of the population earns less than Rs.20/-per day.So far, TV Cables have been widely deployed to distribute Satellite contents to Household TV sets. You have few cable operators in a region who downlink satellite contents using big Dishes and distribute the content through cables to households…. The share of DTH operators has risen to 17% from 4% in 2007 while that of cable operators declined to 83% from 96%.Dish TV from Zee Group was the first player in the market and so it obviously had the early bird advantage…. With in short span of introduction, SUN DTH was able to reach deep with its attractive channel packages, tariff structures and advertisement.If you look at investments, each subscriber acquisition costs Rs.4600/- to the DTH company…. Tata Sky remains the top Arpu grosser with an average Rs200 a month while Sun Direct has an Arpu level of Rs.85/- Also, the study predicts that by year 2013, DTH market share will be at 28%.
