We know broadband penetration in India is bad. When many other countries are having average broadband speed at over 4 Mbps …There has been some initiatives from few players in the country to bump up the internet speed. One such is the Metro Ethernet Scheme of MTNL … over three years to lay a five lakh km optic fibre cable (OFC) network to reach every gram panchayat. Now, MTNL has again gone a step further and introduced very high bit rate digital subscriber line VDSL.VDSL, the next version of the current technology, (ADSL), will increase the data speed from 1-2 Mbps to 10-20 Mbps…. However, its not clear whether we need new kind of modems to move to VDSL plans.Tata Communications, has instead gone with a different technology called metro ethernet and offers speeds of up to 100 Mbps in Mumbai. However, MTNL, with its extensive in-the-ground copper lines and lakhs of DSL customers, has chosen to migrate to the next line of DSL technology, instead of putting in new ethernet infrastructure. Thats clever move.So far, higher broadband speeds (10Mbps or so ) are achieved through leased lines offered by players like Reliance Communications, British Telecom and Tata Communications…. With the increase in broadband speeds, the new platform will allow it to offer a large number of high definition (HD) TV channels on its IPTV services in the future.

From the below TRAI chart, 96% of 7 million broadband subscribers are still at 256 kbps speed. On a global basis, the average connection speed increased by approximately 11%, growing to 1.7 Mbps. South Korea is known to be the country with highest broadband penetration and with greater speeds. India with 256kbps average broadband connection speed, lags behind 75% of world countries in broadband penetration and at connection speeds.
