Mobile Number Portability delayed again – Shame on BSNL, MTNL – for God’s sake.. implement MNP faster!

October 31, 2010 — “yet to be delayed” deadline for Mobile Number Portability… And, many a times, the reason given out for the deadline extension was – “few telecom operators aren’t technically ready for MNP”….The few operators who are not technically ready are none other than our state run telecoms – BSNL and MTNL….If MNP were implemented earlier, high paying customers would jump easily to telecom operators with 3G spectrum license and most of the telecom companies don’t want that to happen…

The much awaited Telecom project – Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has got delayed and Department Of Telecommunications (DoT) has set a new deadline as March 31, 2010…. Yes, at Rs.19/- you will be able to hop between the telecom providers of your wish and even between CDMA plans to GSM plans.This project is suppose to drive telecom providers in improving the quality of service to retain their customers. It will also marginally reduce tariffs in areas where there is insufficient price competition such as international roaming, value added services etc.The first segment that new entrants like Uninor, MTS and few others will target as soon as number portability is launched is the elite set of postpaid subscribers of existing operators like Bharti, Vodafone, Idea, Aircel, BSNL and Reliance…. There is already concerns over Telecordia as it has operation in Pakistan also and it has majority governing ( as Telecordia’s partner Deepak Talwar Consultants does not have any expertise in the telecom sector) in the Indian MNP project also….
