When many other countries are having average broadband speed at over 4 Mbps …There has been some initiatives from few players in the country to bump up the internet speed. One such is the Metro Ethernet Scheme of MTNL … over three years to lay a five lakh km optic fibre cable (OFC) network to reach every gram panchayat. Country’s Telecom Public Sector Unit (PSU), BSNL is shedding out an infrastructure company to implement this mega project and work with other PSUs like Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) and RailTel. Broadband penetration in India – Broadband Subscriber base, Average connection speeds in India and other countries

As per the Broadband Policy, Broadband is defined as -“An `always-on’ data connection that is able to support interactive services including Internet access and has the capability of the minimum download speed of 256 kilo bits per second (kbps) to an individual subscriber from… The country’s broadband subscriber base will still be hanging on the lower orders even after few years.Not just the broadband penetration is weak, but the connection speed also…. From the below TRAI chart, 96% of 7 million broadband subscribers are still at 256 kbps speed.On a global basis, the average connection speed increased by approximately 11%, growing to 1.7 Mbps. South Korea is known to be the country with highest broadband penetration and with greater speeds. India with 256kbps average broadband connection speed, lags behind 75% of world countries in broadband penetration and at connection speeds.
